Reindeer Day

We were all excited that today was our last day together in 2008! We are excited that the holidays are finally here! Our word of the day today was "could". It was a rule breaker, because we couldn't hear the "l". It is related to "would" and "should". It is also used in contractions! Later in the morning, we had a math logic poster lesson. Mrs. Myers showed us four Christmas tree pictures. We had to use her clues to eliminate one poster with each clue. At the end, we knew the tree that she was describing. It was fun. We were all excited to have our holiday lunch party together. Mrs. Myers played holiday music. Some of us sang. We ate on the floor "picnic" style or at a different friend's seat. Mrs. Myers gave us a holiday treat to eat. Then, we played two holiday games. We played "pass the candycane". It was like hot potatoe. Instead of getting out, if you were the person with the candy cane when the music stopped, you got to go to the middle of the circle and act out a holiday noun. Then we got to guess your word. It was funny. Then, we played "hide the candy cane". We used clues to guess who had it! After our party, we had a reindeer quiz. Then, we read a reindeer nonfiction book and checked our quiz. We learned so many facts. With a partner, we typed one fact and glued it to our reindeer art project. At the end of the day, we watched Arthur's Christmas/Hanukkah movie and had a Roundtown holiday sing-a-long. Have a very happy holiday!!! See you in 2009!

Three Days Until the Big Day

It was a different morning for our class today. Mrs. Myers was home with her daugher Madeline, who was sick. We had a substitute named, Mrs. Forney. Our word of the day today was "way". It was rule follower, because it belonged in the "hay of -ay". This word is a homonym for the word weigh. In math today, we practiced subtraction using dominos. We learned to subtract horizontally and vertically. We word as a class and in small groups to write subtraction equations. The rule to remember is "big number first". After lunch and recess, Mrs. Myers came to school. We read a story called Rock Star Santa. It was about a very different Santa. We had to listen to the story without seeing the pictures and visualize how we saw the Rock Star Santa. It was hard, but we listened carefully to the words in the story to make a picture in our head. Then, we drew our picture and wrote words that were important from the story. Last, Mrs. Myers read the whole story to us and showed us the pictures. Our Santa's were close to Rock Star Santa. In writing workshop today, we learned about Christmas Around the World. First, we heard the story, Jingle Bells, about December celebrations in other countries. We talked about our own traditions we have in our homes, too. Last, we used the Smartboard to see celebrations in other countries and learned about Hanukkah and Kwanzaa. At the end of the day, we had phys. ed. We also got gingerbread homework to be due on January 6. We are going to have a great time decorating our projects at home. We also got an early Christmas gift from Mrs. Myers. Our coupon books are awesome. We are going to eat together tomorrow. We will have a special holiday party over lunch!!!

PS - Check out the pictures from our holiday projects. The boys and girls worked so hard on the Polar Express fantasy train ride stories, Christmas similes, possessive packages for 's, and Christmas sense stories.

It's Friday!

Our word of the day today was "no". It looks like "on" backwards. It was a homonym for the word "know". The word "no" was a rule breaker with a twist, because the "o" says his name without a "magic letter" to help. In the morning, we had two special visitors. Mrs. Myers' daughter, Madeline, visited and did morning meeting and word of the day with us. Mrs. Craig was our second visitor. She listened to us sing some of our song and poetry folder songs. After library, lunch, and recess, we heard the story, Three Bears' Christmas. We compared this new version to the story, Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We also made lots of predictions as we read, but the author tricked us sometimes. Ask us how the story was tricky. Then, we went to second grade to meet with our computer buddies. We learned how to use the draw program to made a snowman to match our Frosty acrostic poems from last week. Then, we came back to our classroom and finished our learning and art centers. For writing workshop today, we brainstormed the five different ways we can write a "grab the reader" beginnings. (setting, question, quotation, something important, onomatopoeia). Then, we listened to the beginning of lots of holiday stories. Mrs. Myers had us move to the area of the classroom that showed the kind of beginning the author used. Some books had two different kinds of beginnings. At the end of the day, we earned a Dr. Suess movie. It has been a long week with lots of indoor recess. With Christmas just around the corner, the boys and girls earned an extra reward. We will continue our holiday theme next week!

Lot of Holiday Cheer

Our word of the day today was "number". It was a rule follower. We heard the bossy r sound in it. We also know that the "u" should stay short, because there are two consonants after it! It was not a popular word family. Some of us got to play Dynamite with Mrs. Bashada in the hallway. In math today, we estimated candy canes in our estimation jar. We looked at ten in the jar and estimated that 25 would fill the jar. Then, Mrs. Myers put some in the jar. We knew our estimate would be between 10 and 25. We did a great job and had three winners - Evan, Madison, and Abby. After lunch and recess, we heard a story in Mrs. Lauber's classroom. We heard, Who's That Knocking on Christmas Eve. It was by Jan Brett. After the story, we worked with a partner to retell the story by ordering the picture event cards. We made this into a little book to share with you tonight. Then, it was time for centers. We worked on the body in the art center. After centers, we had a writing workshop lesson. We practiced nouns, adjectives, and similes for the holidays. First we wrote a noun on our wipe-off board. Next, we wrote a simile about the noun. Last, we typed the simile on the computer with a partner from Mrs. Lauber's class. We will be hanging our similes on stockings in the hallway. At the end of the day, we had guidance. Miss Anderson came to discuss the green circle. We learned about empathy. We have stay at homework to share with you from Miss Anderson. If you get a chance to stop in at Roundtown, please check out the awesome writing and projects in our hallway. A special thanks to Mrs. Pressley for all of the artwork she donated to help us share our class projects with Roundtown.

Holiday Fun

Our word of the day today was "see". It was a verb. There is another word "sea" that is the homonym. That word is a noun. Both words are rule followers, because the "e" has a vowel pair who hold the "magic wand". It was a popular word family. In math today, we finished our holiday centers. We had more subtraction practice. Please check my mail to see how we did. When we finished our centers, we played "around the world" with addition facts. After lunch and recess, Mr. Seibel came for a while, while Mrs. Myers had a meeting. He read us the story, Auntie Claus. It was a great story. The little girl, Sophie, in the story changes from the beginning to the end. We discusses how and why Sophie changes how she acted and felt from the beginning to the end of the story. Then, we had reading workshop and guided reading. During this time, Mrs. Rishel took groups of students in the hallway. We practiced word wall words and shot baskets to earn points . We will play this game in the morning meeting. Then, we had centers. After centers, we had writing workshop. In writing workshop, we heard the story, Pussycat's Christmas. The cat in the story used his senses to describe his Christmas Eve. Then, we wrote stories to describe our Christmas Eve using our senses. We will hang our story "ornaments" on a Christmas tree in the hall. We finished our day with art class!

A Snowy Day

Our word of the day today was "go". It was a rule breaker with a twist, because the "o" said his name without another vowel, but this happens in a lot of other "o" family words. We saw that many of the "o" family words look like "ow" or "oe" at the end. In math today, we went to two math centers. There are four centers and a bonus center. We had numberline subtraction. We jumped backwards to match cards. We did growing patterns with Mrs. Myers. We used Hershey kisses to make growing patterns. We had a graphing center, where we sorted and graphed different kinds of Christmas cookies. At the last center, we used Christmas tree math mats and Christmas balls to show subtraction sentences. We drew and crossed out the balls. Our extra center is dice subtraction. After lunch and recess, we read the Mooseletoe story. We stopped at the problem part of the story and wrote our own solutions. Then we listened to the real solution and wrote about it. Guy had the correct solution. After that, we went to our second grade computer buddies. We practiced using the drawing program on Microsoft Word to color, draw, move, and write text. We can try this at home! Then, we came back to our classroom and had making words. We made three and four letter words using the letters, e, e, n,r,s,s, p, t. Then we made the super-jumbo bonus word - presents. Maddie had it first. At the end of the day, we had centers. We are making a reindeer in the art center. YEAH SNOW!!!

December Holidays

Our theme this week is December holidays. Our word of the day today was "write". It was a rule breaker, because the "w" was silent. It had a homonyn, "right". It was very popular, so we listed the words on the kite of "ite". We also listed words on the the "light of -ight". In math today, we practiced subtraction on the numberline. We used Mrs. Myers' giant numberline and we each had a turn jumping a subtraction equation. We got to jump backwards!!!! At our seats, we used cubes to jump the equation. We had races and Mrs. Myers jumped, too. The rule to remember in subtraction - The biggest number must come first!!! After lunch and recess, we went to Mrs. Lauber's room to read the story, Mrs. Claus Takes a Vacation. After the story, we went back to our classroom and worked in groups of three or four to organize the events on a GO map. Last, we practiced retelling the WHEN - WHO - WHERE. We also practiced deciding the important vocabulary to include when we shared each event in our own words. Then in was time for new Christmas centers. In games center one, we practiced our consonant blends - gr, cr, fr, br. We put decorations on the correct blend tree. We had to color the code on the worksheets. In games center 2, we matched the contraction "nose" to the reindeer's antler's that had the two separate words. In the sentences strip center, we put holiday words in alphabetical order by the second letter. We also practiced writing adjectives to describe each noun. In the writing center, we practiced proofreading a nonfiction story about the holidays. At writing workshop today, we learned about "'s". This is called a possessive. It means that something belongs to someone. We wrote holiday possessives by giving presents to our friends and family. We will be making a possessive present tree outside the classroom. (ex. Mom's necklace) At the end of the day, we watched a holiday movie about Kwaanza and Christmas.

Polar Express Party

Today was our Polar Express Party Day! Our word of the day was "more". It was a rule breaker, because it had a decoration "e". It was a popular word family, and there were many ways to spell the -ore family. This word is an adverb. In math today, we practiced subtraction using Polar Express story problems. We used the strategy "act it out" to act out subtraction problems. We highlighted the important information from the story problem and wrote the equation. At the end of the lesson, we worked in groups to create and act out our own subtraction story problem. After lunch and recess, we finished the Polar Express movie. Then, we went to centers. In the art center, we finished our crayon resist by watercolor painting. Then, it was finally time for our Polar Express Party. We made a train in the hallway and Mrs. Myers punched our tickets. We listened to songs from the Polar Express soundtrack. We drank hot chocolate and ate candy canes. Then, we listened to the Polar Express story being read. At the end of the party, we played two games - The Conductor Says and Pass the Bell, like hot potato, but with a character trait twist. Ask me about it at home tonight!!! At the end of the day, we had our special sharing. Mr. Seibel listened to our special sharing, too. It was a great day, but very busy. Our theme next week will be December holidays. Sorry there are no pictures on the blog. Mrs. Myers' computer crashed and lost all of our pictures!

Thursday, December 11, 2008

One More Day!

Our word of the day today was "two". It was a homonym word for "to" and "too". It was a rule breaker, because the "w" was a decoration and the "o" said "oo". It was a adjective. After lunch, we read the story, A Wild Christmas Reindeer by Jan Brett. We compared this new story to the Polar Express. We can finish the venn diagram for bonus tonight. Then it was reading workshop and guided reading time. Finally, we had writing workshop time. We finished our fantasy train ride stories. At the end of the day, we had a special treat. We watched the first half of the Polar Express. Please remember to wear pajamas. Bring you slippers, so you have sneakers for phys. ed. We can't wait for our Polar Express party!

Board the Train

Our word of the day today was "look". It was a rule follower. We learned a new rule about "oo" as a vowel diphthong. It can say a different sound than "the boo of oo". The "ook" family was popular. In math today, we estimated how many bells were in our estimation jar. There were 65. Elle, Anna, and Abby were the closest. Mrs. Myers was too. We all had a smart guess, because we all guessed over 40 using clues from the jar. After lunch and recess, we did a poetry activity. We sequenced a poem about Polar Express by thinking about the events in the story. Without even looking at the poem, we had all the events in order, except for two. We practiced reading the poem. Last, we highlighted the consonant digraphs (sh, ch, th, wh) and our verbs with endings. (ing or ed). Then it was reading workshop time and guided reading. After that, we had a BIG writing workshop project. We filled out a GO organizer to brainstorm the events in the beginning, middle, and ending of our stories. We added similes and content using our senses. We will finish our stories tomorrow. They will hang in the hallway with our awesome Polar Express train designed by Mrs. Pressley. We also have boarded the train with our window sillouettes. At the end of the day, we had center time. Mrs. Myers opened the art center. We are doing a three day crayon resist of our favorite illustration in the Polar Express book.

A Fantasy Train Ride

Our theme this week is the Polar Express. Our word of the day today was "time". It was a rule follower, because it followed the CVCe pattern. It was a popular word family. We listed the words on the board. It rhymes with the contraction "I'm". In math today, we introduced the concept of subtraction. We brainstormed what we thought we knew about it already. We learned the words "minus" and "difference". We also learned that subtraction is like going "backwards" or "taking away". We learned the most important rule of subtraction - Start with the BIG NUMBER FIRST". In groups, we learned to subtract using bells. Mrs. Myers gave us jingle bells and bowls. We made equations by starting out with the big number of the jingle bell set. Then, we took away a smaller number of bells and hid them under our bowl "cave". We counted how many "were left". It was fun. At the end, we got to work with a partner to be the teacher or the learner. After lunch, we finally got to hear the story The Polar Express. It was so magical. After that, we compared a real train ride to the fantasy ride on the Polar Express. We used a venn diagram. We recorded some answers for you to see in our mail tonight. Then, we had reading workshop. At writing workshop time, we learned a new part of style. It was called similes. We learned that we can make a better picture in our reader's head by adding similes to our stories. A simile describes a noun or a verb by adding an adjective or adverb and a noun. (The hot cocoa was as rich and thick as melted chocolate bars). We listened for similes in the Polar Express story. We wrote our own similes at the end of the lesson. We will use them in our "Fantasy Train Ride" story on Wednesday. At the end of the day, we had a center tour. Our new centers are Polar Express centers. In the games center, we are sorting consonant digraph pictures onto train cars and putting contraction words on Santa's reindeer's bells. In the writing center, we are writing a letter to a character in the Polar Express. In the sentence strips center, we are matching nouns and adjectives from the story. Tomorrow, we will have the art center opened!

More Fantasy Stories

Our word of the day today was "into". It was a compound word. It was a rule breaker, because the "o" said the "oo" sound. After recess, we had math with Mrs. Lauber's class. We used the Smart Board again to practice our number sense on the hundred's chart. We practiced counting, finding numbers, adding on ten, and ordering numbers using less and greater. You can try the same activity at home on your computer, by visiting my links section. After lunch and recess, we read the story Probuditi, by Chris Van Allsburg. It was really a fantasy story with a surprise ending. We worked in groups on GO maps. We really practiced telling the "when-who-where" so it sounds like a story and not a list. Ryan showed us how to add motions to our "when-who-where" to help us remember where to look on the green triangle of the GO map. Then, we heard a second Chris Van Allsburg story. It was called, Zathura. It was a sequel to the story Jumanji. Many of us have seen the movie and were excited to hear the book. It was also a fantasy story that could never happen. Next, we had reading workshop time and guided reading. Then, it was writing workshop time. Some of us tried to write holiday stories about things happening at home for the holidays. Others tried to write a Chris Van Allsburg style story that had lots of fantasy. We even tried to write a story like Jumanji and Zathura. Mrs. Myers is still typing our autobiographies. At the end of the day, we watched a movie. Have a great weekend. Check out the newsletter and Polar Express Party invitation in our mail. Next week's theme is The Polar Express.

Allsburg Fantasy Day

We started reading a new Chris Van Allsburg book, called Bad Day at Riverbend. Ask me about the surprise ending. We learned that Chris Van Allsburg's writing style is the genre called fantasy. Our word of the day today was "him". It was a rule follower. It followed the CVC rule. This word is a pronoun for a boy's name. After recess, we had book exchange. Then, it was time for math. Mrs. Myers showed us a hundred's chart on the Smart Board. We practiced using the different rows and columns. We raced to find numbers. We practiced finding greater, less, and it between numbers. We also learned how to add 9, 10, or 11 on the hundred's chart. We counted by 1's, 2's, 5's, and 10's. We will used the Smart Board tomorrow to do some different hundred's chart games. If you are interested, please visit my hundred's chart link on my teacher page. After lunch, we read our second book, The Sweetest Fig. It was really fantasy. Ask me why! We retold the story on a GO map in our groups. Then, we went to Mrs. Weikert's class to have computer time with our second grade buddies. We typed an acrostic poem called FROSTY. We used each beginning letter to start a focused sentence about Frosty. We also had time to practice our typing program or visit some other school links. Back in our classroom, we had writing or reading workshop. We had a choice, while Mrs. Myers met with us to type our autobiographies. At the end of the day, we had phys. ed. and read Junie B. Jones.

A special congratulations to Anna's Yankanich's family on the birth of a new daughter. We were all so excited to hear the news. We would like to collect some data about our own births. Please send in our birth weight and length tomorrow for a data collection activity.

Biographies and Autobiographies

Our word of the day today was "like". It was a rule follower, because it followed the CVCe rule. It was a popular word family. We wrote the word in the family on "the bike of -ike". We had library, lunch, and recess. At library, we read the book Jumanji, by Chris Van Allsburg. After lunch, we read the story, The Z was Zapped. It was an alphabet book, full of alliteration. Alliteration is when all the words and sounds in a sentence begin the same. After the story, we worked with a partner, to write an alliteration sentence. Check it out in tonight's mail. Then it was time for reading workshop and guided reading. Some of us have a book to share at home tonight. Then, we started writing workshop. We finished our autobiographies. We will be typing them tomorrow with our second grade computer buddy. At the end of the day, we played more letter and sound games. Mrs. Myers taught us the game, "What's Missing". There were nine words on the board. We practiced reading them. Then, we hid our eyes and Mrs. Myers hid a word. When we turned around, we had to write the word that was missing. We did this with one word missing, two words missing, and three words missing. Then, we played the game with our own key ring and a partner. Try this out at home. Just a reminder, used book exchange is tomorrow!

Chris Van Allsburg

Our theme this week is the author, Chris Van Allsburg. Our word of the day today was "make". It was a rule follower, because it followed the CVCe pattern. We used our "magic e" wand. The -ake family was very popular. We wrote many words on the "cake of -ake" for our clothesline. We also read the story, Jake Bakes a Cake and listened for the -ake family words. After recess, we had music, lunch, and recess again. After that, we read our first Chris Van Allsburg story. It was called Two Bad Ants. We practiced predicting using the clues in the words and the pictures. We had a predicting partner who we shared ideas with. We were great at using the clues, just like a real detective. Then, we had reading workshop and Mrs. Myers took two groups for guided reading. Then, it was time for writing workshop. We brainstormed on an organizer for our autobiography. We used a hamburger organizer. We also brainstormed our "Grab the Reader" beginning and our "WOW" ending. We will write our stories tomorrow. At the end of the day, we played two word and sound games. The first was called "Word Ladder" . We practiced changing one letter in each word on the ladder to make a new word. We went all the way down the ladder twice. The second game we played was "HEART". We played three rounds with word wall and clothesline words. We even used all the words in our room for round three. We had three finalists - Grace, Thomas, and Elle. Elle was our winner today! We had a busy day. More Chris Van Allsburg tomorrow!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Today was the last day of school before Thanksgiving! Our word of the day today was "her". It was a rule follower. It was also a pronoun to take the place of a girls name. After our morning routine, we had a dress rehearsal performance of the ABC's of Thanksgiving Reader's Theater. We performed for Mrs. Lauber's class. We videotaped the performance. Right now, the video is having technical difficulties. (It's stuck inside the camera!!!). If we get it fixed, I'll upload the performance! After recess, we had a fun math lesson. We learned a new word - probability. Probability is the chance that something will happen. We made a probability line and organized events into "always" happens, "sometimes" happens, and "never" happens. Then, we divided into groups of three. Each group had a bag of turkeys, either yellow or orange, or both. We had to pull the turkey out of the bag nine times. Each time, we colored our data on a turkey. At the end, we made a prediction about what color turkeys were in our bag. Then, we looked. Most of us were correct! That's probability! Last, we wrote a sentence using the new vocabulary words on the back of our paper. Then, it was time for lunch and recess. After recess, we read the story, The First Thanksgiving. We talked about the Indians at the first Thanksgiving. Massasoit, the leader, was invited by the Pilgrims, but he brought along 90 other Indians to the feast. Then, we came back to the chart we made on the first day of the unit. We looked at the things we thought we knew when we started the unit. Most of them were correct. Then, we looked at the questions that we wanted to learn. We answered most of them from the facts that we learned in the past two weeks. Last, we made a circle an each shared a new fact we learned during the unit. Mrs. Myers was amazed at the interesting facts we remembered. Just before music class, we played a game called Overboard. We all got on a pretend boat. We had to spell a word - letter by letter. If you missed a letter, you were thrown "overboard". We did let you back on the ship, after you practiced writing the word on your wipe-off board. It was a great day! We can't wait for our vacation! See you all at conferences. Mrs. Myers will be out on Monday for a personal day. No blog until Tuesday! Happy Thanksgiving!

Feast Day

Our word of the day today was "some". It was a homonym for the math word "sum". It was a rule breaker, because the "o" said the sound of "short u". The -um family was very popular. We made a long list of words. In math today, we practiced growing patterns. We made three Indian growing patterns on our vests to wear to the feast. We used symbols, just the Indians. Check them at home tonight. See if you can tell the name of each pattern. After lunch and recess, we read the story, The First Thanksgiving. Mrs. Myers wrote a list of Thanksgiving words on the easel. We had to tell her which two words did not belong. We weren't sure how the words were related. After the story, she told us the most of the words were nouns. A noun is a word that names a person, a place, or a thing. We found the two verbs on the list and crossed them off. We looked for other nouns in our word of the day sentence. Then, we sang a new song about nouns. We added it to our song and poetry folder. Last, we did a paper where we sorted nouns into person, place, or thing. Then, we had reading workshop. After that, we practiced a dress rehearsal of our reader's theater for tomorrow's performance. At movie time, we watched a movie about Thanksgiving and Plimoth Plantation. We learned a few new facts. At the end of the day, we put on out pattern headbands, our necklaces, and our vests. We went to share our cranberry bread with first grade at our feast. We sang some of the songs and poems from our folder. We ate cranberry bread, trail mix, popcorn, and apple cider. It was so yummy fun! We were so thankful for our feast. A special thanks to Mrs. Welty and Mrs. Carlisle for setting up and helping with the feast. Thanks to all who donated paper products!

A Cranberry Day

Our word of the day today was "them". It was a rule follower. We noticed that it looked almost like the word them. It was a pronoun. It takes the place of a group of people. In math today, we practiced making and naming repeating patterns. After some practice, we went to two different pattern stations. At the first pattern station, we made Indian necklaces using beans with an AABC pattern. At the second stations, we made Indian headbands using feathers with an ABCCD pattern. We will wear both at our Thanksgiving Feast on Monday. After lunch and recess, we read the story, Cranberry Thanksgiving. It is an old story, but we loved it, because the author tricked us! After the story, we retold the story on a story map. Then, we had center make-up time, and we practiced our Reader's Theater. For Fun Friday, we played word family tic tac toe. After that, it was time to cook! We were so excited to have our cooking show. Mrs. Donner, Mrs. Kurland, and Mrs. Welty came to help us good. We were divided into six teams. Each team made their own cranberry bread. Before we cooked, we had to order the events of the recipe. Then, we put our teams in order, using these events. Next, we wrote our "grab the reader" beginning for the story - How to Make Cranberry Bread. Then, we began mixing and cooking. Next, we counted to 75 as the stirrers stirred the mix. Last, the parent helpers poured the mix into bowls. They are taking it home to cook for our feast on Monday. We want to give them a big THANK YOU!!! They even did the dishes! At the end of the day, we had phys. ed. and sharing! Please open the video attached to today's blog, if you want to view our cooking show! ENJOY!

Our Quilt of Learning

Our word of the day today was "many". It was a rule breaker, because the "a" said the sound of short e. It was an adjective. We hung the "many penny" from the ceiling to help us remember this rule breaker word. After library, lunch, and recess, we had another lesson about the pilgrims. We used the Smartboard to learn new facts. We compared the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Indians in how they dressed, their houses, their chores, their schooling, what games they played, and the foods they eat. We also learned all about the first winter that the Pilgrims lived in Plimoth. We learned that the Pilgrims were sick and weak as they had to build one large building to live in. In December, two people died. In January, eight people died. In February, 17 people died. In March, 13 people died. It was very sad for the Pilgrims. In March, the weather began to change. The Pilgrims met the Wampanoag Indians who helped them plant and hunt. We will continue our journey tomorrow. Then, we had reading workshop and Mrs. Myers read with some friends. At writing workshop time, we made a quilt telling all the facts we learned about the pilgrims, indians, and the Mayflower. Check it out when you visit for conferences. At the end of the day, we had center time. We also got our parts for the reader's theater called the ABC's of the First Thanksgiving. We will perform in next Tuesday. Look for a podcast.

Turkey Day

Our word of the day today was "these". It was a rule breaker, because the "s" said the sound of "z". It had a CVCe pattern, though, so we used our magic "e" wand to show how it changed the first vowel. We practiced more turkey songs today. We have so many songs to sing at our first grade feast on Monday. After music, lunch, and recess, we practiced sorting facts and opinions about turkeys. We listened to a statement and decided with claps if it was a fact statement or an opinion statement and added the facts and opinion feathers to our fact and opinion turkeys. Then, we went into the hallway and used the Smartboard and took a quiz with Mrs. Lauber's class about turkey and Thanksgiving facts. We knew 13 answers out of 20. We know lots of facts about turkeys. We learned some new facts and turkeys, too. We learned that Benjamin Franklin tried to change our national bird to the turkey. Abraham Lincoln tried to change the date of Thanksgiving. We learned that Minnesoda produces the most turkeys. We learned that Israel eats the most turkeys each year. Then, we had reading workshop and centers. Mrs. Myers is still reading with us one at a time. At writing workshop today, we learned to write a poem called a cinquain. We had to choose a focus related to Thanksgiving. Then, we listed adjectives, nouns, verbs, and synonyms for our poem. We will take the poems home tomorrow for you to read. At the end of the day, we had a guidance lesson. Miss Anderson taught us about the green circle. We will share all about it at home with our HOME work.

The Long Jouney

Our word of the day today was "so". It was a rule breaker with a twist. The "o" said his name, with out another vowel helper, but we see this happen in other words like... no, go, ho. This word is a homonym for the word "sew". It is also an adverb. After our morning routine, we had lots of Mayflower learning. First, we used the Smartboard to hear about the Speedwell. It broke down because it had a leak. It was from Holland, but met the Mayflower in England. They tried for a month to fix it, but they couldn't. Then, we saw the names of all the pilgrims who sailed on the Mayflower. Some had funny names like wrestling, love, oceanus, remember. They were named after things they liked to do or virtues. After recess, we continued to use the Smartboard. We saw the different parts of the Mayflower and look a interactive trip across the Altlantic Ocean using the internet. We got to touch and press things on the Smartboard to see and hear new facts. At lunch, we really enjoyed our Thanksgiving dinner. We had to cancel "eat lunch with the teacher" because it was the holiday meal. We will use our passes tomorrow. After lunch, we learned about the laws the pilgrims made when they landed in Massachusetts. It was called the Mayflower Compact. Only the men could sign it. The girls were mad. Kids couldn't sign it either. That wasn't fair. We also learned that the pilgrims weren't trying to land in Massachusetts. They were trying to sail to Virginia. After the pilgrims landed, they still had to stay on the Mayflower, because they had to build a place to live. Then, we took a break from the Mayflower and had our own centers and reading workshop. Mrs. Myers is reading with us one at a time. Then, it was writing workshop time. Mrs. Myers shared stories from last week. We heard the content of Annabelle's, Ryan's, and Ian's stories. We practiced that good content means - characters, setting, problem, and solution, lots of events, and adjectives! Then, we wrote in our journals. Last, she shared Madison's story. She taught us how to use commas in a series of names and how to tag our quotations. WOW! We will hear more stories tomorrow. At the end of the day, we had art class.

Parent Visitation Day

We were so excited to have all of the parents and grandparents in our classroom today! It was great to show you all of the different things you have been hearing about all year. We hope you enjoyed your visit. If you have any questions about what you saw, please let me know!

Our word of the day today was "then". It was a rule follower, and a word on the pen of -en. We read the whole word family aloud. We also learned that this word is not a homonym, but it has a cousin who looks almost like it AND sometimes sounds like it, too. It is the word "than". We learned that "then" tells something is happening next. The word "than" compares two things. Soon, it was time for math. We were excited to collect data using an art project. It was a turkey glyph. First, we filled out the data sheet. Next, we visited the stations of the art center. Last, we made a pictograph on the carpet and told true math statements about it. We will make another pictograph with different data on our turkey tomorrow. Look for it in the hallway at conferences! After lunch and recess, we read the story, Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving. We retold the story on a GO map. Many of the parents were there to help us. Then, we practiced telling the "when, who, where" of the green triangle on our GO map. Then, we went to see our second grade computer buddies. We practiced typing using the typing game. We are really doing a great job of keeping our hands on the home keys. Then, we taught our second grade buddy a fact about a turkey. We typed the fact and changed the font and size. We will use these facts to make a class book! After that, we came back to our classroom for making words. We used the letters to make three letter words in the -ow, -ay, and -ar families. Then, we had the super-jumbo-bonus word. It was Mayflower. Madison had the word first! Then, we went to music class. At the end of the day, we played our making words detective game. Then, we had a new center tour. In the games centers, we are sorting the question and telling sentences onto different turkeys and then practicing writing question sentences. In the other games center, we are finding the missing short vowel sounds. In the magnetic letters, we are making short vowel words from pictures. In the sentence strips center, we are sorting Thanksgiving words into alphabetical order to the third letter. We don't have an art center this week. We will be working on neatness in our centers and proofreading for extra beans!

On the Mayflower

Our word of the day today was "about". It was a rule breaker, because the "a" says the sound of "short u". We saw the vowel dipthong "ou" from yesterday's word "out". In math centers, we visited our last two centers. When we finished, we visited "Addition Alley" to play addition flashcards with a partner. After lunch and recess, we read the story, The Great Turkey Rescue. It was the sequel to the story in the listening center. After the story, we used picture cards of the events and sequenced them in order. Then, we retold the story together. After the activity, we headed to Mrs. Lauber's room to hear the last story in the series about the turkeys. It was called, The Silly Turkey Party. Then, it was time to board the Mayflower. We learned three facts about the Mayflower. First, it is 90 feet longs. We walked ninety feet in the hallway and decided that it was bigger than our classroom, but not as big as our hallway. It was be very crowded on the Mayflower. We also learned that the captain's name was Christopher Jones. The Mayflower held 90 passengers. On Tuesday we will really see what the journey was like. Next, we had our center time. We finished any leftover work from the week. We also finished our turkey art center. For FUN FRIDAY, Mrs. Myers had Thanksgiving word family tic tac toe or word family board game. It was fun. Finally it was writing time. We were excited to finish our turkey stories. They turned out really good. Please read them when you visit next week. After we wrote, we filled out a story checklist. We proofread and met with our story partner. They heard our story and decided if we were finished or not. We can't wait to write our next big story! At the end of the day, we watched a Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. We hope is stops raining soon!

Packing for the Big Journey

Our word of the day today was "out". It was rule follower. We practiced a new dipthong, the "ou" sound. We hung the "ou" of ouch in our classroom to help us with this tricky sound. Today's word was an adverb. In the morning, we started our pilgrim lesson by learned where the pilgrims lived. They lived in England, where the king made they workship at Church of England. The pilgrim did not like this, so they decided to move to Holland. In Holland, they did like that they had to act Dutch. So, they decided to be like Columbus and sail across the Atlantic Ocean, to find religious freedom in a new world. We had to pack an imaginary suitcase for our trip. We made a big circle and shared our suitcase items. We listed them on a chart. Then, Mrs. Myers broke the bad news that each family could only take a small box for all of their belongings. We had to cross off many of the items we didn't NEED! They were called our WANTS. We also learned that the pilgrims had no electric for wII, DS, or TV. They didn't have iPods either. We made a new list of things we would need to take to survive with Target, a grocery store, or even a house. Then, we got on two boats, the Mayflower and the Speedwell. The Speedwell was a bigger, nicer boat, so most of us chose to get on that boat. Soon, the Speedwell broke down. We all had to get off the board and wait. Then we found out that the Speedwell would not be able to sail. We all crowded onto the small Mayflower. Tomorrow we set said again. At math time, we had math centers. We practiced ordering numbers, comparing numbers, problem solving using reasoning, and making a bar graph and true math statements. It was fun! At the end of the day, we had writing workshop. We used our GO Map organizers to write the story called, My Turkey Ran Away. We had to put a grab the reader beginning with a partner. We also learned to "pinky check" our sentences. Ask me what that means tonight. Finally, we ended the day with phys. ed. Mr. Stiffler said that we are one of the best first grade classes! YEAH!

From Kids to Pilgrims

Our word of the day today was "up". It was a rule follower. The word "up' belongs in the -up family. It wasn't popular, but we find the word "up" as a chunk in lots of words. The word up is a describing word. It describes a verb, so it is called an adverb. At lunch, ten friends joined Mrs. Myers for lunch in the classroom. They used the 50 point pass from doing their Rah! Rah! homework. We had so much fun eating and laughing together. We listened to loud music, too! After lunch, we did our pilgrim unit with Mrs. Lauber's class. In the big area, we brainstormed what we knew about the first Thanksgiving and our Thanksgiving. We brainstormed about the foods eaten, the activities, and who was involved. Then, we came back to our classroom and made a venn diagram of the information on the board. We made our own venn diagrams, too. To help us with our facts, we read the story, Thanksgiving Is... Check them out! Then, we played a new game called DYNAMITE. We practiced our word family words from the clothesline in our classroom. We pulled a word out of the DYNAMITE can. If we could read the word, we stayed in the game, unless we pulled the DYNAMITE card! Elizabeth was our winner today! Then, it time for writing workshop. We reviewed what good content means. We focused on adjectives today. First, Mrs. Myers read the story, Plump and Perky Turkey. We listened for the adjectives in the story. Then, we looked at a photograph of a turkey and helped Mrs. Myers record adjectives to describe her turkey. Then, we worked in groups with our own picture of a turkey to describe using adjectives. Last, we typed our adjective sentence with a partner. We will use our sentences for a game on Friday. At the end of the day, we had our second center of the week. Mrs. Myers introduced the the art center. We are making a handprint and footprint turkey. Mrs. Myers will not be here tomorrow! NO BLOG!

Thanksgiving Theme

Our theme this week is Thanksgiving. Our word of the day today was "will". It was a rule follower. It was homonyn, too. It was from a very popular word family, the hill of -ill. We listed lots of words on our hill for our clothesline. At math time, we learned about new kind of graph called a pie graph. We collected data about our favorite kind of pie. First we tallied our data. Then, we used string to make a human pie graph. Then, while we worked on a pie graph paper, Mrs. Myers showed our data on the television using a pie graph and bar graph. We learned that a pie graph does not show as many details as a bar graph. After lunch and recess, we met with Mrs. Lauber's class. We brainstormed everything we thought we knew about the pilgrims, indians, and the first thanksgiving. We discussed who were the pilgrims, where did they come from, how was their ride on the Mayflower, why did they move. Then, we met with a group and decided one thing we would like to learn about the pilgrims, the indians, and the first thanksgiving. We recorded both of these on a KWL chart. Then, we had reading workshop time. Finally it was time for our new Thanksgiving centers. In the sentence strips center, we are matching contractions to the two words that make the contraction. In the listening center, we heard the story, The Great Turkey Race. We recorded the story elements. We had to listen for two problems and write the solution to each problem. In the writing center, we wrote a silly story about a turkey at the mall. We had to use ten of the word of day words that Mrs. Myers picked. In the games center, we were "dressing" a turkey with feathers to match the short vowel that is missing. We had a short a turkey, a short i turkey, a short o turkey, and a short u turkey. Tomorrow, the art center will open. After centers, we had our writing workshop time. Mrs. Myers helped us understand what the word content means. It was tricky. She brought along a stuffed turkey named Mr. Gobbles to show us how "stuffing" our stories with events, adjectives, and details makes the story "meatier". If we just include the characters, setting, problem, and solution, we have a skeleton story, just like Mr. Bones in the art center two weeks ago. We worked hard to add "meat" to our stories . We will work on content all week! At the end of the day, we had art! Tomorrow, we will arrive to school as a pilgrim!

Silly Mr. Munsch

Today we read more silly Mr. Munsch! Our word of the day today was "their". It was a homonyn with the "there" we learned last week. It was a rule breaker with a twist. We were a little confused by the "ei" in the middle, because he said the "long a" sound. We noticed that the same letters say the long a sound in the word "eight", so it must be almost a rule! Today's "their" is a pronoun meaning two or more people. After morning meeting, we read the story, Kiss Me, I'm Perfect. It was so silly. Before we heard the story, Mrs. Myers showed us a list of words that we would hear in the story. We noticed that were verbs with the -ed ending. After the story, Mrs. Myers helped us read the words again from the chart. We listened with a partner to see if the -ed ending sounded like a "d" or a "t". This is important, because we need to know how to spell words that end in -ed and read the words, too. After lunch and recess, we had a math lesson with Mrs. Lauber's class. We collected data about our favorite Robert Munsch book. We had to tally each person's favorite book. Then, we looked at the data to see which book was the winner. Boo was the most popular Robert Munsch book. The reason why we collected our data together, was to get a bigger sample size. Our data was more accurate. After math, it was centertime. Today we went to our fourth center. We continued to paint our favorite Robert Munsch book in the art center. At writing workshop time, we read the book, Mmmm Cookies. We looked for the Robert Munsch style. We wrote in our journals using Robert Munsch style, too. After writing time, all of the first graders went to Mr. Seibel for a lesson on responsibility. The first grade teachers had a meeting together. Finally it was movie time. We watched the movie, A Paperbag Princess by Robert Munsch. We loved this story when we heard it earlier in the week. It was great! Just a reminder... tomorrow is an early dismissal day at 12:30PM.

Lots and Lots of Munsch

Today Mrs. Myers shared that she found out that Robert Munsch is not writing right now. He had a stroke in August and he home recovering. We will send him get well wishes. We started our day listening to him read the story, We Share Everything. It was funny. Our word of the day today was "how". It was a rule follower, because we learned the "ow" diphthong rule. We added words to the "cow of -ow. IT was a popular word family . We learned that -ou also says the same sound. In math today, we did data collection using Robert Munsch books. We looked at the books in groups and tallied to see if the main character was a boy or a girl. Then, we graphed our results on a bar graph. We learned that Robert Munsch uses both characters about half of the time. It was close - 18 boy books to 16 girl books, but we didn't look at ALL the books he has written. After lunch, we had another Munsch. It was called I Have to Go. Before the story, Mrs. Myers showed us a bunch of words from the story, We talked about how we thought they were related, but no one realized that they were all compound words. After the story, we learned that a compound word is when you take one word and you take another word and you squish them. Then you get a new word. We played a game where we each a card with word. We had to find our partner to make a compound word. Then, we had to decide if our compound word made sense when the two words were combined (ex. sun + glasses = glasses you wear in the sun). It was fun. We are going to be on the look out for compound words in our stories we read! As a treat, Mrs. Myers read another Robert Munsch book to us. It was called I'm So Embarrassed. We talked about our own embarrassing stories! At writing workshop time, we add to our list of Robert Munsch's writing style. We noticed that he also uses onomatopoeia in his stories! Then, Mrs. Myers read the story, Make-up Mess. We got busy writing our own stories with Robert Munsch style. At the end of writing time, Mrs. Myers read Thomas' story. It was not finished, but it sounded just like a Robert Munsch book. It was called Crazy Abigail. It had a funny problem, repeating events and words, and onomatopoeias. He will finish the story soon! Mrs. Myers also shared Guy's story. It had a great beginning and used a Robert Munsch story as an idea! At the end of the day, we had phys. ed. What a great day!

Robert Munsch Author Study

Our theme this week is the author, Robert Munsch. We are learning lots by reading his books. Our word of the day was "do". It was a homonym for the word "dew". It was rule breaker, because the "o" said the sound of "oo". Also in the morning, we did a class election. We went down to the voting booth in the lobby. We had 12 boys and girls vote for McCain. We had 6 boys and girls vote for Obama. In all of Roundtown, 57% voted for McCain and 43% voted for Obama. It looks like McCain has won at Roundtown. We'll see the results of our country tomorrow. After library, lunch, and recess, we had a guest lesson by Mrs. Thomas, the reading specialist at Roundtown. She read us the story, Hazel's Best Mom. We listened for story connections. After the story, we sorted the connections by little and big. A big connection is a connection that helps us understand the story. A little connection is a connection to a name or small event in the story. After Mrs. Thomas left, we heard the story, The Paperbag Princess. We practiced retelling the story using props. Please check the paperbag in the mail today. I will retell the story to you tonight. We can visit Mrs. Myers' teacher page to hear Robert Munsch read the story, too. In writing workshop today, we listened to the story, Yellow, Red, and Purple. It was so funny. We listed the elements of Robert Munsch's writing style. He has surprise endings, repeating events and words, and funny problems. Then we tried to write with Robert Munsch's style. We will keep trying all week! At the end of the day, we had centers. This week's writing center is about writing a letter to Robert Munsch. We are going to send our letters to him! In the sentence strip center, we are highlighting contractions in Robert Munsch's story, We Share Everything. Then, we are sorting the contraction into two words. In the "Read the Room " center, we are proofreading words that Mrs. Myers has spelled wrong that are in our classroom. In the listening center, we are listening to the story, Alligator Baby and sorting the story elements - character, setting, problem, and solution. We are excited for the art center tomorrow - painting!!! GO VOTE!

Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween! We apologize for missing the blog yesterday. We were so busy finishing up our centers that we forgot to fit it in. The most exciting part about yesterday was our visit to our second grade computer buddies. We used a typing game to learn to use the "home keys" on the keyboard. This game in on the internet. You can find it and use it at home by visiting Mrs. Myers' teacher page and clicking on the links page.

Today our word of the day was "which". It was a rule follower with lots of consonant digraph sounds. It has a homonyn -the word "witch". We practiced the -itch family on a witch's hat. Later in the morning, we finished our October calendar. Check my mail tonight to see what I thought was the best part of the month. After recess, we finished our math centers. We used the giant numberline to add. We used number stamps and pumpkin cards to show the commutative property. We used candy corn and candy corn math mats to add. Last, we used number beanbags to find the sums for different numbers. After lunch and recess, we read the story Shake dem Halloween Bones. It was a great story. It had a song in it, too. We listened to hear all the characters from other stories who were at the Halloween ball. We made great book - to - book connections. We had reading workshop and finished our centers. For Fun Friday, we had a Halloween crossword puzzle and a new story in the listening center. We also worked with a partner to spell words on the big wipe-off board. We also finished the art center. Our q-tip skeletons turned out great! We had fun! After centers, we had writing workshop time. We continued to write in our journals. Mrs. Myers conferenced with us about our "grab the reader" beginnings. They were so great! At the end of writing time, Mrs. Myers shared beginnings by Ian, Thomas, Macy G, Evan, Matthew, and Nicolas. They used questions, something important, onomatopoeia, and quotations to start their stories. YAY! To end our day, we earned a Halloween reward. We had a Halloween dance party as we listened to The Casper Slide. It was so fun. Check out the video and pictures! Happy Halloween to everyone! Have a great time trick-or-treating and be safe!

Almost Halloween

Today our word of the day was "an". It was a rule follower, but it had a funny accent on the "a". We read the words we already wrote on the "can of -an". We learned that the word "an" is just like the word "a", but we use it when the word that follows it in a sentence begins with a vowel. (ex. I will be an alligator for Halloween). After word of the day, we had math. For Halloween math, we used candy corn as the tool to measure the length of objects around our classroom. We discussed how we usually use a ruler, yardstick, or a tape measure to measure length. One candy corn was the same as one inch, so we could still measure in inches, but without a normal measurement tool. First, we worked with a partner to choose an object in the classroom that was less than 12 inches. Next, we drew our object on the recording sheet. Then, we estimated how many candy corns long our object would be. Last, we checked our estimate by measuring using the candy corn. We recorded our information on our recording sheet. It was fun. Let's try it out at home. After lunch and recess, Mr. Seibel came and read a story to our class. It was called, I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Bat. After the story, we put the events in order using pictures. Then, Mrs. Myers helped us make a retelling bag with the old lady on the front. We retold the story using our props with a partner. I can't wait to retell the story to you tonight. Then it was time for reading workshop and guided reading. At the end of reading time, Madison gave us a book commercial about the book, Spooky Hour. Then, Grace, Elizabeth, Ian, and Ryan performed a reader's theater of the book, Sam's Seasons. We really liked the surprise "WOW" ending. Finally, it was center time. We visited our third center and got to do the first part of the art center. At writing workshop time, we didn't do regular writing today. Instead, we played a game to practice stretching our words. We listened for word family and word of the day words around the room. We also tried to use the sounds on the clothesline like - ar, -am, -oo, and the consonant digraphs sounds - sh, ch, wh, and th. It was a very busy day. We are learning so much! Today is the end of the first marking period. We are so surprised that the time is passing so quickly. Only two more days until Halloween - we can't wait!

A Few Tricks and Treats

Our word of the day today was "use". It was a rule breaker, because the "s" made the sound of "z". We liked the way "magic e" did his job to change "us" into "use". It was not a popular word family. Later in the morning, we went to Mrs. Lauber's class to hear the story, Halloween, by Gail Gibbons. It was a nonfiction story to teach us facts about the history and holiday of Halloween. Before we heard the story, we worked with a partner. We read a new vocabulary card and decided if the word would be in the story or not. During the story, we listened for our word. We stood when we heard it. All of the people who thought their vocabulary word would not be in the story were wrong. Mrs. Myers tricked us. Then, we wrote two new facts about Halloween and one opinion. After recess, Big Shark's Halloween Mystery. We retold the story using a GO map. We practiced telling the when, who, where of the story. We put a star on the problem event and a star on the solution event. Then, we had reading workshop and guided reading. Then, we had centertime. Mrs. Myers introduced our new art center. We are making a skeleton using q-tips for bones. We are so excited. At writing workshop time, we went to Mrs. Lauber's class. Mrs. Myers read us a story that she wrote. It didn't have an ending. We divided into eight groups and each group was assigned a kind of ending. We used a feelings ending, a question ending, a surprise ending, and a something important ending. At the end, we shared our endings and awarded beans to the best ending of each type. We will continue to practice using these new endings for a long time! We finished our day with phys. ed. and Junie B. Jones.

Halloween Week

Our theme this week is Halloween. Our word of the day today was "there". It was a rule breaker, because of the "ere" at the end. This word is a homonyn for the words "their" and the contraction "they're". In math today, we did candy corn estimation. There were 35 candy corn in the jar. Dawson had a perfect estimate. We had other close guesses, too. We had library, lunch, and recess. After recess, Mrs. Myers read the story, The Brave Witch. We listened for contractions in the story. We learned how to pull the contraction into two words and put it back together. A clue that a word is a contraction is to look for the apostrophe. We had reading workshop next and Mrs. Myers read with a group. Then, we had a special visitor. Mr. Carlisle, Abby's dad, came to visit our classroom. He is a dentist, and he came to remind us to brush our teeth twice a day, especially after we get Halloween candy! After our visit, we read the story, The Room on the Broom. We listed words on the -oom broom. We made brooms to read to you at home! Then, it was time for writing workshop. Mrs. Lauber's class joined us. We learned how to write a "WOW" ending. Ask me to show you the "WOW" signal at home tonight. We can end a story using a feelings ending, a surprise ending, telling something important, question, and or a fantasy ending. We will practice this all week! At the end of the day, we had new centers for Halloween. In the games center, we are adding hats and brooms to witches who have contraction shirts. The hat and the broom tell the two words that make the contraction. In the sentence strips centers, we are reading the book, Skeleton Hiccups. Then, we are finding the verbs from the story, circling the root word, and underlining the ending -ed. In the writing center, we are choosing a card from the character pile, the setting pile, and the verb pile. Then, we are making a story using these cards. The last center is the listening center. We are listening to the story, The Spookiest Halloween Ever. We are writing and drawing a text to self connection to the book. We will hear all about the art center tomorrow!

Fall Festival

Today was a fantastic fall festival day! We started the day with a Steven Courtney concert. He was great! Mrs. Myers has almost all of his CD's so we will be listening to him in our classroom, too. If you want to hear his music, his website is in Mrs. Myers links page in the school website. Mrs. Myers' daughter, Madeline and her mom came for the show. We were excited to meet them. After the concert, we went to music class, lunch, and recess. Then, we met with Mrs. Lauber's class to hear the story, The Biggest Pumpkin Ever. It was a really neat story. The events in the story were the same for each character. It was called parallel events. In the middle of the story, the two characters meet and the events come together. After the story, we worked in three groups to sequence each character's events. Then, we retold the story together using our teams. Then, it was time for writing workshop. We stayed with Mrs. Lauber's class and finished our "build-a-story" scarecrow project. Each student wrote an event to the whole story. We are hanging it in the hallway for everyone to see. We also made a book for our classroom library. It is quite a scarecrow adventure for Bob! After that, we had our fun Friday time. A few of us had to finish our centers. The rest of us made a pumpkin on a vine to show the steps of how a pumpkin grows. We will finish our projects on Monday. After recess, we had our fall festival party. Mrs. Rishel, Mrs. Donnor, Mrs. Pressley, Mrs. Bashada, Mrs. Elder, and Mrs. Yancanich threw a great party for us. We made a ghost craft that was really spooky. We heard the story, Pumpkin Soup. We ate some yummy food in the dark and listened to Halloween music. Last, we played fall BINGO. We all won stickers!! It was the best party ever. We also wanted to thank all the parents who donated foods for our party and to Mrs. Bowman for planning the party, even though she wasn't here today. YEAH! FALL!

MOST IMPORTANTLY - Have a great weekend and GO PENN STATE!!!

A Very Busy Day!

We started our day a little mixed up! First, we went to our second grade buddies and did our writing time on the computer. We practiced opening a word document, wrote one fact and one opinion about pumpkins, changed the font and the size, and printed it. We will try to use the computer without our buddy tomorrow at writing time! After recess, we came back for a guest math lesson. Mrs. Mumme, our math coach, came to our classroom to teach us a reasoning lesson. We worked in groups to solve reasoning problems. It was fun. She will be visiting our classroom again soon! After lunch and recess, we came back to the classroom and had word of the day. Our word today was "when". It was a rule follower. It was so popular. We recorded the word family on the "pen of -en". We have to work really hard to spell this word in adult writing, because the "wh" is tricky! Next, it was time for our afternoon story. Mrs. Lauber read the story, Patty's Pumpkin Patch. After the story, we made a personal connection to the story. We could connect it to another story, a movie, or our own lives. We circle the connection on both sides of the paper. We had a short reading workshop. Then, we listened to a pumpkin story, just for fun. It was called Pumpkin Town. It was really funny and had great pictures. At centertime, we went to our fourth center. In the art center, we made the stem and teh leaf on our three dimensional pumpkin project. They are looking great! The last step is tomorrow. We also made a book about how pumpkins grow. Ask me to read it to you when it comes home. At the end of the day, we had art! Remember, tomorrow is Roundtown's Fall Day. Dress in Roundtown clothing or fall attire. We are excited to have our fall party and hear Steven Courtney!

Pumpkins, Pumpkins, Pumpkins

We started our day visiting Our word of the day today was "your". It was a pronoun. The word "your" is a rule breaker, because the "u" does not below with the "or" to say or. It was a popular word family, but there was six different ways to write it. WOW - that is confusing! In math today, we went to three math centers. We finished our packet, and you can see it in our mail tonight. After lunch and recess, Mrs. Myers read the story, The Vanishing Pumpkin. It was a fantasy story. We liked it a lot. After the story, we drew or wrote the story elements - characters, setting -when and where, problem, and solution on a story map. We are working very hard to do neat and careful work. We can earn lots of bean for taking our time! (but not too much :) Then, it was time for reading workshop. After reading workshop, Mrs. Myers read the story, The Pumpkin Patch. It was a great nonfiction story about how a pumpkin grows. The story was full of photographs from a real farm. We learned lots of new facts and saw the steps of how a pumpkin grows. Tomorrow morning, we are going to make our own book about it, to share with you. The day was going by so fast. We went to music and recess and then back to class. Mrs. Myers introduced the new art center. We are making a three dimensional pumpkin. Today we did the first step. We made round, orange balls! We finished our centers for the third day. At the end of the day, Ryan Fahs and Jordan Winkler read a new Junie B. Jones book to us. We finished the day with a "pumpkin hug" from Mrs. Myers!

Pumpkins Everywhere

Our word of the day today was "can". It was a rule follower with a twist. The "a" said a funny sound when it went with the "n". It was a popular word family. We wrote lots of words on the "can of -an". Today's word was a CVC word. After word of the day, we heard the story Apples and Pumpkins. We compared the things that were the same and different about apples and pumpkins on a venn diagram. We will finish this activity tomorrow for morning work. After recess, many of us went to the Book Fair to buy our books. We can still bring our money tonight or tomorrow morning, if we are going to buy books. In math today, we had math centers. We made growing patterns using candy corn and pumpkins. We used math mats and practiced adding using candy pumpkins. Then, we wrote and drew the math the math sentence. In the domino math center, we practiced the commutative property using dominos. The last center group met with Mrs. Myers to do guided math practice. We will continue these center tomorrow. After lunch and recess, Mrs. Myers read the story, Runaway Pumpkin. It was one of her favorites!!! We liked it, too. After the story, we worked in groups to retell the story on a GO map at our seats. We practiced telling the "when-who-where" from the green shape of the GO map. Ask us to retell the story to you. At reading workshop time, we continued to work on our packet. Many of us are finishing, so check our mail to see what we have been working on this month. Mrs. Myers met with two reading groups. Then, it was centertime. We went to our second language arts center. Finally, it was writing time. We were so excited to learn more about "grab the reader" beginnings. Mrs. Myers read us six more story beginnings. We learned that great authors use - great settings, ask a questions, use an onomatopoeia, tell something important, and use once upon a time to get a story started and excite the audience. We learned that you can combine these together to make a really good beginning. Once upon a time can only be used for fantasy, and we should always combine it with another kind of beginning. Then, we continued to write in our journals. Our stories are getting longer and longer. We were so excited about writing, we almost missed recess! Mrs. Myers is going to start our writing time tomorrow with sharing time, because she sees so many neat things in our journals! At the end of the day, we watched the movie, It's A Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. We listened the beginning of the movie. It was different from the beginning in the story. The book was a "something important" beginning. The movie was just silly events. We ended the day with Shaelyn reading the class a story.

Pumpkin Time

Our theme this week is pumpkins! We are excited that Halloween is right around the corner! Our word of the day today was "we". It was a pronoun. It was also a homonym to the words "wee" and "wii". This word was half a rule breaker and a rule follower. The "e" in "we" says his name, but there is no magic vowel. It does happen in these words - we, be, he, she, me. This morning, we browsed at the Book Fair. Please check my mail today to see the books I might like to purchase. Tomorrow will be buying day. We can also buy books tomorrow evening! In math today, we practiced addition dominos. We read the story, Domino Addition, too. Mrs. Myers taught us how to write our addition sentences across and up and down. On the up and down sentence, we don't use a equal's sign. It 's called an equal's line. We also learned that you can change the order of the numbers in an addition sentence and still get the same sum. It 's called the commutative property. After lunch and recess, we went to Mrs. Lauber's room. Mrs. Myers read the story The Stubborn Pumpkin. It was like the story The Enormous Watermelon, we read during watermelon week. We acted out a retelling of the story in groups. It was funny! We had character cards and narrators for each group. Then, it was time for new pumpkin centers. In games center, we sorted short and long u pictures on pumpkins. In the writing center, we drew a jack-o-lantern. Then, we described it so Mrs. Myers could guess what it looked like, without looking at our picture first! In the poetry center, we read the poem, The Pumpkin on the Vine. We practiced reading it. Then we made a personal connection to the poem. In the listening center, we heard the story, Too Many Pumpkins. We drew and wrote about our favorite part. Art center opens tomorrow! In writing workshop today, we learned to start our story with a "grab the reader" beginning. We listened to the beginning of three stories. We learned to use a descriptive setting or tell something important to get our reader excited about the story. Then, we tried it out! We will continue to learn new ways to start our stories tomorrow.

A Scare-crowy Day

Our word of the day today was "all". It was a rule breaker, because the "a" said the sound of "short o". It was a very popular word family. We recorded the words on the "ball of -all". We learned that "-aw" also says the same sound. In math today, we practiced estimating in our jar. It's when you make a smart guess by comparing something you know to something you don't know. Today we estimated tiny pinecones. There were 55 in the jar. No one had it perfect, but lots of us had between 40 and 60 as a guess. YEAH! We went to music, lunch, and recess. In music we practiced singing our class song. Ask me to sing it for you tonight. After recess, we read the story, Jeb Scarecrow's Pumpkin Patch. After the story, we practiced retelling the story on mini GO maps at our tables. We retold the story using the pattern - when, who, where, first, next, then, next, then, last. We learned that it is very important to start a retelling with our when, who, and where. The who is the character we meet only at the beginning. Ask me to tell you the story of Jeb Scarecrow tonight! Then, we had reading workshop and guided reading. We are checking our packets to make sure we are following directions. Then, we played scarecrow BINGO to practice our word of the day words. Then, it was time for writing workshop. It was computer day. We each got a computer and took it into the big, first grade area. We had a partner from Mrs. Lauber's class. We wrote a class story, each building a part around our circle. We had an exciting beginning, told the when, who, where, and then added lots of events, problems, and a solution. We will be making our story into a book. We had a little bit of a computer problem, but it all worked out. We had our extra recess finally for September. Last, we had a tiny centertime and Ms. Anderson came to our classroom for guidance. She taught us about the stop light for problem solving. We practiced using the steps of the stoplight when we have a problem with a friend. She also taught us to stop and take a few deep breaths before we try to solve a problem, so we don't feel so frustrated. We hope we don't have any problems, but now we know what to do! Don't forget, we have an assembly tomorrow morning. Wear Roundtown PROUD!

Scarecrow Week

Our theme this week is scarecrows. Mrs. Myers is back today, but she is still not healthy. Our word of the day today was "said". It was a rule breaker. It was important, because it tells when someone is talking is a sentence. It is also a clue word that we might see quotation marks or talking marks in our sentence. For health today, we had a fire safety lesson with Mrs. Lauber's class. We brainstorm what we already knew about fire safety, fire prevention, and fire preparation. Then, we watched a video of the story, Stop, Drop, and Roll. We listened for new fire rules. At the end, we worked in groups and sorted cards with fire tips into the three groups. Last, we watched a new fire safety video and share a rule with our neighbor. Remember our fire safety homework is due on Friday. After lunch, we read the story, Little Scarecrow Boy. He had lots of different feelings in the story. After the story, we made personal connections to the feelings the character had in the story. We used a connection paper to write and draw. We circle the feelings that were the same. We had reading workshop, and Mrs. Myers read with boys and girls one at a time. Then, it was centertime. We only have three centers this week, and an art center. In the writing center, you have to write a story using the characters, setting, and problem that Mrs. Myers gives us about a scarecrow. We have to write a solution. In the games center, we are building three scarecrows out of parts for the -ar, -ad, -all word families. We are recording the words we make. In the sentence strips center, we have word of the day words on scarecrow cards. We have to practice spelling the words using mixed up letters and record them by their word shape. In the art center, we are making a giant scarecrow using color patterns. After centers, we read the story, The Scarecrow's Hat. We learned many new vocabulary words. The words we learned, by listening to the story were - swap, trustworthy, benefit, grateful, relief, delighted. Ask me what these words mean. Then, it was time for a quick math lesson. Mrs. Myers put a giant numberline on the floor. We used the numberline on our desk. We had scarecrow puppets to jump adding sentences on the numberline. We found the sum. We will practice more numberline addition for morning work tomorrow. At the end of the day, we went to art!

Half Day of Fall Fun!

Friday was such a busy day. Our word of the day today was "but". It was a CVC pattern word, and it was a rule follower. It was a homonym for the word "butt". We giggled a little bit about this. We learned that there are three meanings of the words "but" and "butt". One is a verb. One is a noun. One is a sentence connecter. We listed the -ut family words on the "nut of -ut". We had an early recess at 10AM. When we got back, we played a game guess the answers to the focused fall riddles we wrote yesterday in writing workshop. Then, it was time for lunch! After lunch and recess, we visited the last two math centers. Then, we had language arts centertime. In the art center, we used marbles covered in paint and rolled them around a tray to created a zig-zag pattern on our leaf. It was so much fun! Soon, it was time to head home. It was such a fast half day. Our theme next week will continue with fall. It's scarecrows! We are excited. Please remember to check our mail today for the newsletter and our fire safety packet that needs to be returned next week! GO PENN STATE!

What a Day!

Today was a very busy day! Our word of the day was "not". The word was a rule follower. The homonym for "not" is "knot". Our word of the day was a popular word family. We recorded the words on the "pot of -ot". We also learned that "not" is a CVC word. That means that it is a consonant-vowel-consonant word. Mrs. Myers tested us on our key ring words this morning. Check in our orange folder tonight to see how we did. After recess we had math. We started new math centers. In the first center, we are working on growing patterns. In the second center, we are counting by 5's. The third center is meeting with Mrs. Myers. She is checking to see if we can count by 2's and 5's. She is also working with us on repeating and growing patterns. In our fourth center, we are working with a partner to write and count by 2's, 5's, and 10's. We will finish up math centers tomorrow morning. After lunch, we heard the story, Nuts To You. The author was Lois Ehlert. Mrs. Myers has many stories in her classroom library by this author. In our lesson, we talked more about root words and endings. Today we looked for the -ing and the -ed ending in story. We did a good job. We found out that the CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words we learned about in the morning need a "twin" when you add an ending to it. After our lesson, we worked independently on an ending paper. Then it was time for guided reading and reading workshop. Some of us are beginning to finish our first reading workshop packet. You will see it soon . We had centertime next. We finished our fourth center. In the art center, we were allowed to spray paint another color onto our leave. Then, it was writing workshop time. We loved our writing time today. We reviewed FOCUS and we wrote a focused riddle about some part of fall. (a fall sight, fall holiday, fall activity) We had to write 5 clues to describe it. The first couple clues were supposed to be hard and then they were supposed to get easier. Mrs. Myers is making them into a book. First, we are going to play a game to see if the other students can guess our fall thing. If they do, we know we had a good FOCUS. Then, our book will go in the library center. We are so excited! After our last recess we had a fire drill. We got out safely, but Mrs. Myers was very upset with our self-control. We forgot all the rules that we just practiced! Some of us were running. We forgot where to stop outside the building. We were talking on the way outside. We are going to do much better next time! We ended the day with phys. ed. Don't forget that tomorrow is a half day! :)

More Fall Fun!

Today was Madison's birthday. We sang to her first thing in the morning! Our word of the day today was "by". It was a rule follower, because we learned the new rule that "y" sometimes says the sound of "i" at the end of a word. This word family was very popular. We recorded the words on the "cry of -y". There were some other ways to write this word family, too. The word "by" is a homonyn. with the words "bye" and "buy". We thought it was cool that the word "by" rhymes with Guy's name. After library and recess, we went to Mrs. Lauber's room. We heard the story, Earl the Squirrel. It was by Don Freeman, the author of the Cordoroy books. It was such a great story. After the story, we sequenced the events on picture cards. We practiced retelling the story using these pictures. Ask me to retell the story to you tonight. Then, it was time for reading workshop. That's our favorite. At writing workshop time today, we got to meet with Mrs. Lauber's boys and girls again and use the computers. We reviewed how good authors write "focused" stories. We typed our "fun in the fall" stories on the computer. The, we learned to change the font and the size and print them. We illustrated our stories for a focused, class book. At the end of writing time, we had a few minutes to squeeze in a handwriting lesson for letter "Oo". It's an easy letter. After recess, we had centertime. In the art center, we got to spray paint our leaf. Tomorrow, we will get to paint our leaf another color. It was a great day. Sorry again for the late blog - more technical problems!

Focused on Fall

Our word of the day today was "word". It was a rule breaker, because "or" said the sound of "er", "ir" or "ur". It was not a popular word family. In was a noun - a naming word. In math, we estimated acorns. Estimation is making a smart guess. We compared ten acorns to our actual estimation. Grace and Mrs. Myers were just right. We had 47 acorns in our jar. After math, we had library, lunch, and recess. Then, Mrs. Myers read us a story called Fresh Fall Leaves. We listened for the verbs in the story. We noticed that all of the verbs had an -ing ending. This means the verb is happening in the present tense - right now! We learned that the verb is called the root word when it has an ending on it. We also learned that sometimes a verb changes when we add an ending. Sometimes we have to add a twin letter to keep the vowels apart. Sometimes we have to kick the magic e away, because the ending does his job. We did a worksheet to match root words and endings. Then we had guided reading and reading workshop. We had centertime next. Mrs. Myers introduced the first step of the art center. We traced and cut giant fall leaves. When it was time for writing workshop, we went to Mrs. Lauber's room. We learned about FOCUS. Focus is like using a camera to block out all of the other things in the picture and zoom into one main subject. In writing, we pick our the main idea of the story and zoom down to only tell the details about that subject. We practiced listening to Mrs. Lauber and Mrs. Myers tell stories. When they lost their focus, we gave them the "stop" signal. Then, we wrote a focused sentence about "fun in fall" with a partner. We will be working on focus all week. At the end of the day, we had an assembly. Students from the high school performed a play for us. It was funny! We also had a guest reader - Ryan Fahs. We ended the day with Junie B. Jones! YEAH!

Fall into Fall

I apologize again for the lateness of this blog. We are truly having technical difficulties getting into the google server. We were really excited to begin our fall theme today. We began the day telling our favorite fall activities. We will make a graph later in the week. Our word of the day today was "had". It was a rule follower. It was popular, too. We wrote the -ad word family on the "sad dad". This word is closely related to his "brothers" have and has. Today's word happened already - past tense. After word of the day, we met in Mrs. Lauber's room for our social studies lesson. Mrs. Lauber and Mrs. Myers each read us a nonfiction book about fall. They both had mostly facts, but a few opinions about fall. We practiced telling fact and opinion statements. For morning work tomorrow, we will write one fact and one opinion about fall. After that, we went to recess. Then, it was time for math. We warmed up for math by playing a new skip counting game. To help us practice counting by 5's, Mrs. Myers had us make a circle. Then she handed out cards with the numbers from 5 to 100 (skip counting by 5's). We had to put ourselves in order by 5's while she timed us. The first time was a disaster. It took us 2:43 seconds. The second time, it only took us 40 seconds. That is the new record. We are going to play this game everyday this week at morning meeting to see if we can beat this record. After we were all warmed up, we used leaved to make repeating and growing patterns. Both kinds of patterns begin the same, but a repeating pattern stays the same, where a growing pattern changes and gets bigger. We worked with a partner to make growing patterns with our cubes, and then we compared each groups patterns. Last, we made repeating and growing patterns on a worksheet. By then, it was already lunch. After recess, we read another story with Mrs. Lauber's class. Before the story, we worked in pairs. Mrs. Myers gave us each a leave with a fall vocabulary word. We sorted the word into a category - fall sights, fall weather, fall activities, fall holidays. Then, we listened to the story, Autumn Leaves. After the story, we check our sort. We only had to change a few things. Then, we each wrote a page for our class book, In the Fall. After our lesson, we had a new center tour for our fall language arts centers. In the games center, we are sorting leaves onto word family trees by picture. We are practicing the -at, -and, and -it families. In the magnetic letters center, we are spelling word of the day words on leaves by matching the letters. When we record the answers, we have to fill in the missing letters and use the words in a sentence. In the listening center, we are listening to the story, The Nutty Nutcatchers. We are drawing, writing, and citing our favorite part in the book. The last center is the poetry center. It is a new fall poem called Autumn. We each get to take a turn leading our group in the poem. We even get to use Mrs. Myers' pointer. After we all read the poem together, we are making a personal connection to something in the poem and writing about it in our folder. Tomorrow the art center will open! After centers, Mrs. Myers taught us how to do "making words". She handed out letters and we colored them red if they were vowels and blue if they were consonants. Then, we cut our letters apart and began making and sharing two letter words. Then we did the same with three letter words. At the end o the lesson, Mrs. Myers asked us to make the "super jumbo bonus word"! We used all of our letters to make the word that matched Mrs. Myers' clues. The word was "falling". Madison had the word first! At the end of the lesson, we read the list of words that we made. Then, Mrs. Myers played the word detective game with us. She gave a clue and we made the word from the list that matched her clue. It was fun. We can't wait until next week when we get to do "making words" again! Finally, it was time for art! Check out the cool art project we made today! More fall fun tomorrow!

Good-Bye Zoo

It is the end of zoo week, and boy are we exhausted! Our word of the day today was "one". It was a CRAZY rule breaker! The word family was popular, but it looked very different - "-un". We recorded the words on the "sun of -un". Today's word was a homonym for the word "won". Later in the morning, we had a guidance lesson with Miss Anderson. Check my mail today for a packet from Miss Anderson. I have lots to tell you. At the end of the morning, we had a quick math lesson. We used "Lester" the less than alligator and "Grant" the greater than alligator to look at numbers on our hundred's chart. We looked for the greater number and the number that was less. We also practiced counting by 2's, 5's, and 10's. After lunch, we used the computers from the cart. We worked with a partner from Mrs. Lauber's class to type about the animal Mrs. Myers gave us a picture of from the zoo yesterday. We typed the habitat the animal lives in and one fact we learned from the naturalist yesterday. We are going to put all of our facts together into a class book. Look for the book to come home soon. We will be taking turns sharing it with our families. After our writing time, Mrs. Myers read us a silly story, An Animal Strike at the Zoo. We learned that sometimes books have cause and effect relationships. We looked at cause and effect in our own lives. Then, we worked in teams to match the cause and effect events in the story. It was easy. The day was moving fast. We had music and recess. At the end of the day, we visited our fourth center. We were a little sloppy today. We need to work on following ALL the directions on our center next week. We are ready for a rest over the weekend! GO PENN STATE!!! Our theme next week is fall!
